From centrifugal clutch to clutch lever
The CRF50F and CRF110F work with a centrifugal clutch, whereas the CRF125F uses a four-speed gearbox with a hand-operated clutch lever. On it, your child learns to pull away using the clutch, change gear cleanly and pull in the clutch before a corner – the foundation for any larger motocross bike.
The engine – an air-cooled 124.9 cc four-stroke – delivers strong pulling power low in the rev range, and its considerable rotating mass makes it respond gently if the clutch is released too quickly. That builds confidence fast.
Standard or Big Wheel: which wheel size fits?
There are two wheel sizes to choose from: 17 inches at the front and 14 at the rear on the standard version, 19 at the front and 16 at the rear on the CRF125F (Big Wheel). The larger wheels thus match the format of the CRF150R.
A sitting test shows which version fits. Standing still, your child should find secure footing and be able to move easily while standing on the footpegs. If your child is growing fast at the moment, it is worth trying both versions.
Starter, brakes and frame at a glance
It starts with an electric starter, with a kick-starter as back-up. A 220 mm disc brakes the front wheel, a 95 mm drum the rear. The engine with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) sits in a steel diamond frame.
Care after a day of riding includes a clean air filter, a lubricated chain and bolts that are properly tight. Because a learner bike tips over more often, it is also worth checking the levers and footpegs afterwards.
Practise first, then buy
The MX-Academy rents out the sizes CRF50, CRF110, CRF125 and CRF250 on every motocross course, and the CRF125F is one of the Honda models used on the kids’ courses. That way your child practises using the clutch under guidance before you buy a kids motocross Honda CRF125F.
Purchases go through Honda Motorrad Zürich, which also provides advice; the range includes the kids’ models and used motorcycles, which change regularly. With a second-hand CRF125F, pay particular attention to whether the clutch disengages and bites cleanly, and test both the electric starter and the kick-starter.
Next: moving up to competition
Once clutch work and gear changes are second nature, the CRF150R follows in youth motocross. It is liquid-cooled, has a close-ratio five-speed gearbox and is designed for competition – which is why your child needs advanced riding skills for it. The kids’ dirt bike comparison shows the differences between all the steps.
Frequently asked questions
Can your child start on the CRF125F without any previous experience?
That is possible, as the kids motocross Honda CRF125F is regarded as a forgiving entry-level motorcycle with a clutch. However, your child has to coordinate throttle, brake and clutch at the same time. A course at the MX-Academy quickly shows whether starting directly works or whether the CRF110F without a clutch lever is the better start.
How do you recognise a well-maintained second-hand CRF125F?
By a clutch that disengages cleanly, a lubricated chain without excessive stretch, brakes that bite well and a clean air filter. Ask for service records and check whether it is the standard version or the Big Wheel.
Is the CRF125F already meant for racing?
The CRF125F is designed for getting started and learning. For competition, the CRF150R follows, with liquid cooling and a fully adjustable Showa fork. If racing plans come up later, the racing team of the MX-Academy is the place to turn to: the official Honda MX-Academy Motocross Team of Switzerland.
What protective gear does your child need on the CRF125F?
The basic kit includes a well-fitting helmet, motocross goggles, a protective jacket, knee guards, gloves and boots. As your child often grows a size during the CRF125F years, second-hand gear is also worthwhile – the motocross shop of the MX-Academy stocks it alongside new items.
